Rope pump (manual, low-cost well pump)

A loop of rope threaded with rubber/plastic washers, pulled up through a length of pipe by a hand crank, lifting water to the surface, cheaper and more field-repairable with local materials than a piston-based hand pump. Documented and refined for low-resource contexts by the SMART Centre (Malawi), typically paired with manual well-drilling methods (Mzuzu, Shipo) for a fully self-built water access point where a drilling rig isn't available or affordable.
