Lowtech Graph lists low-tech options for every need of a home. Here you can compare them, find tutorials to build them, and link them together into a circular system. Why low-tech?

Earth wood-fired bread oven

Passive

One of 11 ways to meet this need. Cost, carbon, footprint and rankings are relative to other solutions for the same need, not absolute.

What your site needs

Outdoor space, a roof or shelter over the oven, and clay soil or bought clay.

A domed oven of clay, sand and straw, built outdoors on a raised base. A fire burns inside until the thick earth walls are hot, the embers are raked out, and bread, pizza or slow dishes bake in the stored heat with the door shut. A smaller oven heats faster on less wood. It bakes outside, so the house does not overheat in summer.

Limitations of this page

We don’t list sizing or quantities, as the yield of each technique depends on the quality of its build. The catalogue compares options but doesn’t dimension them. Regulatory notes are indicative, with a French example, and need to be confirmed locally.
