Wind/storm resistance

Holding the house together in a storm. Wind lifts a roof before it pushes a wall over, so the weak point is usually where the roof meets the walls. The options differ in whether they change the shape the wind meets, tie the parts together, or shelter the building behind something else.

• Earth-sheltered / semi-buried form (storm resistance): A house set partly into the ground, with earth against some of its walls and sometimes over its roof. The earth takes the force of the wind off those walls and
• Reinforced roof-to-wall strapping (hurricane ties): Metal straps and ties that fix the roof firmly to the walls. In a storm, wind passing over the roof pulls it upward; the straps hold it down so it stays on the
