Getting rain off the site and away from the foundations. Standing water beside a wall is what turns ordinary weather into damp and movement, and the cheapest fix is the slope of the ground itself. The options differ in whether they shed water, collect it in a pipe, or let it soak in where it does no harm.

• Site grading away from the foundation: Shaping the ground around the house so it slopes down and away from the walls. Rain that falls near the house runs off instead of pooling against the foundation
• French drain around foundation: A perforated pipe laid in a gravel trench around the foot of the house. Water in the soil seeps into the pipe and flows away to a safe outlet instead of soaking
