Keeping chemicals out of the indoor air: what the building materials give off when new, and what daily life adds. The cheapest answer is not to bring the source in. The options differ in whether they avoid the pollutant or capture it once it is there.

Solutions

• Low-VOC / natural material selection: Choosing paints, glues, floors and finishes made from natural materials or labelled as low in emissions. They release little or no chemical vapour into the room
• DIY activated-charcoal air filter: A bottle or box filled with activated charcoal, left in a room without a fan. Charcoal traps some fine dust and chemical vapours from the air passing it. It is
